Freon™ HP80 (R-402A) Refrigerant

A Retrofit Refrigerant for Commercial Refrigeration Systems

Freon™ HP80 (R-402A) refrigerant is used in existing low- and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration systems, including reach-in and walk-in freezers, and supermarket cooling equipment.

Freon™ HP80 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) blend with a small amount of hydrocarbon included to improve compatibility with mineral oil (MO).

Features and Benefits

Freon™ HP80 currently serves a wide range of applications, offering good capacity and efficiency without suffering from high compressor discharge temperatures seen with HCFC-22 single-stage equipment. Freon™ HP80 offers compressor discharge temperatures equivalent to R-502, with improved capacity vs. R-502 and slightly lower theoretical efficiency.

This blend works with a compressor’s existing MO, and often does not require an oil change to operate after the retrofit. However, in some instances, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) do recommend switching to alkylbenzene (AB) oil. Consult the retrofit guidelines of your OEM for your specific application.

Another benefit of using nonflammable Freon™ HP80 to retrofit refrigeration systems running on R-502 includes decreasing the amount of refrigerant needed—10% to 25% less—when making the switch to AB lubricant.

Regulations on the long-term use of refrigerants vary by region and application, and may change over time. For the latest information, please visit the Regulations page.
